PV Systems - Overview

In February 2013, Applied Science Private University was one of the early investors in Jordan in the sector of Renewable Energy, specifically Solar Energy, as an alternative, clean, economical energy source compared with the conventional public grid electricity generated from thermal power plants. By that time, the legal framework and regulations in Jordan was limiting the maximum size of PV Systems allowed for consumers to install as grid-connected systems. The limit was 25% of your consumption, i.e. if you are consuming 100 MWh per year, your system size is limited to generate only 25 MWh per year. 

The vision of the university is represented through becoming at the forefront of the universities that are distinguished in the fields of higher education and scientific research locally and regionally. From this vision, the first large capacity grid-connected PV System is installed in ASU among other universities in Jordan with peak power of 0.51 MWp. The PV System is rooftop mounted on three separate buildings, and generates 25% of the total university energy consumption. However, the most important and valuable part of the PV Systems projects in ASU is the Test Field, it is grid-connected with peak power of 57 kWp. It comprises of different PV technologies and different system orientations and mounting structure (fixed and tracking system). Test field strongly supports the scientific research with its versatile PV Systems and solar panel technologies. 

 

Renewable Energy Center team, students and maintenance department engineers and technicians, all participated the installation process of the PV System, under the supervision and with the help of system's designer and supplier, Kirchner Solar Group GmbH.

The total yield of the 0.51 MWp systems until October 2016 is 2.5 GWh, which when translated to money savings would approximately equal more than 700,000JD! And more than 1800 ton in terms of avoided CO2 amounts.
